Jaan Elken has said that as a painter, he navigates a aesthetically disturbed world which aims to connect to the viewer from a more universal and global position. \u201eI talk about senses and instincts on my paintings, how I sense things. These are very specific. There is nothing abstract about this, so whether art is \u201eabstract\u201c \u201econditional\u201c or \u201esignified\u201c….<\/p>\n
The exhibition \u201epoem to mattress\u201c takes an abstract painting language and talks about very realist associations and experiences. The series of matrasses includes actual matrasses as leitmotif, adding a nostalgic and intimate element to the paintings \u2013 memory, diving into personal layers of memory, including also the early childhood years in Sibir with parents who had been deported there. The paintings refer to experiences, real situations, emotions. The exhibition \u201ePoem to the mattress\u201c in Artdepoo gallery in 2008, Elken wrote a poem where the lines \u201e… striped robe – white plastered wall \u2013 moist mold – humidity from the climate and wrong construction – scratched words…\u201c were born from his memory fragments from experiences.<\/p>\n
Rauno Thomas Moss <\/strong>has written that \u201eElken\u2019s mattresses are somewhat terrorist. Even the place where we lie to temporarily escape from the cruelty of the world becomes an altar, which has been consecrated with sweat and urine; a place where the last sacrament is given. So confession has in this manner had this element of persecution and suffering. Elkens mattrass project can in this manner be called the social portrait of Estonian art.\u201c<\/p>\n
